Students at Crystal View come into the school with a varying levels of school readiness and exposure to literacy and numeracy opportunities. Students from families that provide lots of opportunities tend to see early success in the younger grades - particularly with literacy.
Overall, students in all grades are proficient or exceeding in numeracy than in literacy. In grades 1-3 there are more students in the emerging/developing range than in the proficient/exceeding range for literacy. In the grades 4 and 5 more than half of the students have reached proficient or above.
As students move into the intermediate grades, they are more likely to struggle with writing rather than reading. Assessments show difficulties with use of writing conventions (capitals, spelling, punctuation)
In Numeracy more than 75% of the students are proficient or exceeding expectations.
In school subject areas beyond numeracy and literacy (Socials, Science, Fine Arts, ADST, PE) students are proficient or exceeding by a large majority. Students with self-regulation difficulties are more likely to be at an emerging or developing level in these areas. Students with literacy challenges are just as likely to be successful as their peers in these subjects areas. Report cards indicate that understanding can be shown in multiple different ways beyond writing/tests including orally, with models, in projects, with the use of technology.
As a community, students are supportive of each other and are willing to take risks with their learning. This can be seen in their willingness to present in front of each other and adults in the community.
